Starter Set

Essentials Kit

D&D Essentials Kit

The Dungeons and Dragons Essentials kit is a fantastic resource. We really love this kit as it contains everything you need to start playing. A printed version of the basic rulebook, along with a full adventure to run with your players. There are 6 blank character sheets, a dungeon master screen, 11 dice, a double sided map, and 81 cards for the magic items and sidekicks that feature in this adventure.

While the set supports up to one Dungeon Master and five players, this is also the first official D&D 5th edition product supporting play with only a DM and a single player, thanks to the introduction of sidekicks to fill the role of other players in the party.

Player’s Handbook

DnD Players Handbook

If you are a player you’ll eventually want a copy of the Player’s Handbook. This is the essential reference for every Dungeons & Dragons roleplayer. The D&D Player’s Handbook contains rules for character creation and advancement, backgrounds and skills, exploration and combat, equipment, spells, and much more. This book contains rules for many more races and classes than are in the free basic rules. If you want to play as a Tiefling Warlock or a Half Orc Barbarian, you’ll need a copy of this book.

The DM’s Guide contains all of the rules and inspiration a Dungeon Master needs to run an awesome D&D campaign. In this book we find world-building tips and tools, information on creating believable and memorable dungeons and adventures. Wizards of the Coast offer a number of free standard D&D 5e Character Sheets alongside their free D&D rules, in a classic and alternative modern aesthetic, with options for printable character sheets that can be filled in by hand to form-fillable character sheets, which can be filled in on a computer using Adobe Acrobat or similar for a neater experience or for DMs to make premade characters. In our opinion the best character sheets for D&D are class specific character sheets. A class-specific sheet will ensure you only have the pertinent information for your particular character class for a more streamlined experience, with specific slots for tracking a Barbarian’s rage or a Sorcerer’s spells without any additional chaff for other classes getting in the way. These do cost a very small amount but are well worth the cost.

Dyslexic Friendly D&D Character Sheet

While for most people, a standard character sheet may work perfectly, we feel that D&D should be inclusive to everyone, so here are our pick of the best character sheets for people with dyslexia or for the visually impaired.

These sheets are written in a large, bold typeface with symbols replacing much of the text, leaving out some of the less pertinent information in favour of readability and clarity, and are available for free in multiple languages including English, German and Italian.

D&D Beyond Character Creator
D&D Beyond Character Creator

While we have mostly focused on physical DnD character sheets for playing with friends around a table, it would be remiss of us to not mention online character sheets for use in online play. For online character sheets, there is no better in our eyes than WotC’s own D&D Beyond. This has a superb character creator with fully annotated stats and lots of cool features.

We love the idea of D&D being as portable as possible and with that in mind, we really like small format character sheets that can be more easily tucked into a bag or pocket and take up less space at the game table. Here are our picks of the best pocket sized character sheets.
